During an emergency the Register.Find.Reunite service matches registrations from people affected by an emergency to enquiries made by their loved ones searching for news. Where a match is made, the person who made the enquiry will be notified.

It is important for emergency management agencies to know where people are during emergencies. By registering with Register.Find.Reunite you are also letting important services know that you are OK and what support you may need.

Having your identity confirmed and key identifying documents such as passport, driver’s licence and your Medicare card pre-loaded and available electronically on your phone means you can feel more in control – especially if you need to check in to an evacuation centre or apply for replacement documentation.

It’s a good idea to have at least three key people you could call for help in an emergency. Identify your support network of people you can talk to, including someone nearby who could help. Have a chat with neighbours about what you can do together to lessen the impact of disasters in your community.

Australian Red Cross responded to 42 disasters across every Australian state and territory from 1 July 2021 – 30 June 22, and assisted more than 137,570 people thanks to the efforts of 1,683 volunteers, members and staff. 

Red Cross Pillowcase Program has been delivered in thousands of schools across Australia, often by our volunteers. The workshop encourages children to be participants in their own emergency preparedness by asking them to decorate and fill a pillowcase with the essentials they would take with them in an emergency.

It’s important to have an emergency plan for your furry friends too!

Plan for where your animals can stay during an evacuation. Also think about who you would call to help you if an emergency happens while you’re away from home – we suggest that you introduce your neighbours to your pets, so if something were to go wrong, someone nearby would be able to help.

When emergency events strike, being prepared, knowing your neighbours and staying connected with your community can make a difference. 

The ABC is your emergency broadcaster and will provide essential up-to-date information, including key alerts, warnings and coverage to help keep communities safe. To find your local ABC radio frequency go to reception.abc.net.au. Make sure you have a battery-operated radio in your emergency kit.
